Matthew Segal is a Director in StrategyCorp’s strategic communications practice and leads StrategyCorp’s Groundswell program that focuses on the politics of permitting and approvals through engagement. Matt’s experience leading public affairs and advocacy campaigns spans more than 15 years across more than 70 jurisdictions in the United States and Canada. He has directed successful project teams across multiple sectors, including mining, waste and recycling, and renewables, securing challenging approvals. His expertise led to the creation of an industry-recognized program of threat/opportunity siting assessments for industrial businesses navigating the intersection of market imperatives and reputational challenges at the local and regional level.

Prior to joining StrategyCorp in Toronto, Matt was an Executive Vice President at Calvert Street Group, where he built a practice focusing on controversial land uses. He has been awarded 13 Pollie Awards from the American Association of Political Consultants (AAPC) for corporate and electoral campaigns. Matt regularly speaks at industry events about overcoming opposition to controversial development projects, including at the Environmental Show of the South, Pellet Fuels International Conference, and the International Bioenergy Conference & Exhibition.

Matthew has a Bachelor of Arts with First-Class Honours from McGill University and a Master’s Degree from the Annenberg School of Communication at the University of Southern California, finishing with the highest GPA in the program. He also has a graduate certificate in Corporate Communications from Seneca College at York University where he was awarded “Best Public Speaker.” Prior to focusing on controversial projects and land uses, he was a successful manager of congressional and gubernatorial campaigns.
